Can I take ibuprofen with Adderall?

Headache on Adderall?
Can I take Advil or Tylenol with my Adderall?Text the AI doctor
In short

Neither ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) nor acetaminophen (Tylenol) is listed as a drug interaction on the Adderall label, so there is no labeled reason you can't take them with it. That is an absence on the label, not a promise that it suits everyone. The main thing to check is blood pressure: Adderall can raise it, and the Advil label says to ask a doctor before use if you have high blood pressure or heart disease. Headache is also a listed side effect of Adderall XR, so regular headaches are worth telling your prescriber about.

Does Adderall interact with ibuprofen or Tylenol?

Adderall is a mix of amphetamine salts. Its FDA label has a long drug interactions list. It names MAO inhibitors, serotonergic drugs such as SSRIs and triptans, CYP2D6 inhibitors, acidifying and alkalinizing agents, tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, blood pressure medicines, lithium, seizure medicines, and others.

Ibuprofen, other NSAIDs, and acetaminophen are not on that list, on either the Adderall or the Adderall XR label. The MedlinePlus page for dextroamphetamine and amphetamine does not name them either. So there is no labeled interaction between Adderall and these pain relievers.

No listed interaction is not the same as safe for you. Each pain reliever has its own warnings, and your other medicines and health conditions still matter. The Advil label says to ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are taking any other drug, and a pharmacist can check your full list in a few minutes.

  • Advil and Motrin are ibuprofen, an NSAID. Advil tablets contain 200 mg each, per the label.
  • Tylenol is acetaminophen. Tylenol Extra Strength caplets contain 500 mg each, per the label.
  • Adderall: dextroamphetamine saccharate, amphetamine aspartate, dextroamphetamine sulfate, and amphetamine sulfate.

Why does blood pressure matter here?

The Adderall label says stimulants raise blood pressure by an average of about 2 to 4 mm Hg and heart rate by about 3 to 6 beats per minute, and that some people have larger increases. It says your prescriber should check your blood pressure and heart rate during treatment.

Ibuprofen has heart warnings of its own. The Advil label says NSAIDs, except aspirin, increase the risk of heart attack, heart failure, and stroke, and the risk is higher if you take more or for longer than directed. It says to ask a doctor before use if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, or have had a stroke.

If you also take blood pressure medicine, ask before reaching for ibuprofen. The Adderall label says amphetamines may work against blood pressure medicines, and the NHS lists blood pressure medicines among those that may not mix well with ibuprofen.

The Tylenol Extra Strength label does not list high blood pressure in its ask-a-doctor warnings. Its main cautions are liver disease and the blood thinner warfarin.

How much ibuprofen or Tylenol can I take?

Follow the label for the product you have. Use the smallest dose that works, for the shortest time.

  • Advil tablets (adults and children 12 and over): 1 tablet every 4 to 6 hours. If 1 does not help, 2 may be used. No more than 6 tablets in 24 hours unless a doctor directs you. Take with food or milk if it upsets your stomach.
  • Tylenol Extra Strength caplets (adults and children 12 and over): 2 caplets every 6 hours. No more than 6 caplets in 24 hours unless a doctor directs you, and no more than 10 days unless a doctor says so.
  • Do not double up. Do not take Tylenol with any other product that contains acetaminophen, including many cold and flu medicines. Do not take ibuprofen with another NSAID such as naproxen (Aleve) or aspirin unless a doctor tells you to.
  • Alcohol: both labels warn about having 3 or more alcoholic drinks a day while using them. For Tylenol the risk is liver damage, and for Advil it is stomach bleeding.

Can I take ibuprofen and Tylenol together while on Adderall?

Sources differ on how cautious to be. The NHS says adults can take paracetamol (acetaminophen) at the same time as ibuprofen if needed, and suggests trying each one on its own first to see if it relieves your pain. MedlinePlus is stricter: it says not to take over-the-counter ibuprofen with any other pain medicine unless your doctor tells you to.

Neither source gives different advice for people on Adderall. A sensible approach is to start with one pain reliever. The Advil label says to ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you take any other drug, so if you think you need both, ask first, especially if you have high blood pressure or heart, kidney, liver, or stomach problems.

When should you get care?

In an emergency, call 911

Tell your prescriber soon if headaches are new, frequent, or getting worse on Adderall, if your home blood pressure readings are higher than usual, or if pain lasts more than 10 days or a fever lasts more than 3 days on ibuprofen or Tylenol.

Call 911 or go to the ER for chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting while on Adderall, per its Medication Guide. MedlinePlus says to get emergency help right away for weakness in one part or side of the body or slurred speech while taking ibuprofen.

Get emergency care for a seizure, or for signs of serotonin syndrome such as agitation, fast heartbeat, fever, sweating, muscle stiffness, or confusion, which the Adderall Medication Guide says need the ER right away. If you vomit blood, have black or bloody stools, or feel faint, stop ibuprofen and call a doctor right away, per the Advil label and MedlinePlus.

If someone took too much Adderall, ibuprofen, or Tylenol, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away, even without symptoms. Call 911 if they collapse, have trouble breathing, or cannot be woken.

Is Adderall causing my headaches?

It can. MedlinePlus lists headache among the side effects of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine. On the Adderall XR label, headache is one of the most common side effects in adults: 26% of adults on Adderall XR in a 4-week trial had headaches, compared with 13% on placebo. The shorter-acting Adderall tablet label lists stomachache, decreased appetite, and nervousness as its most common side effects and does not single out headache.

MedlinePlus says to tell your doctor if a side effect is severe or does not go away. If you are reaching for a pain reliever most days, tell your prescriber rather than treating it on your own long term. Any change to your Adderall dose or timing is your prescriber's decision. Do not skip or change doses on your own.

Common questions

Can I take ibuprofen with Adderall?

The Adderall label does not list ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) among its drug interactions. Check with a doctor first if you have high blood pressure, heart or kidney disease, or a history of stomach ulcers, since the Advil label asks you to. Stick to the label dose.

Can I take Tylenol with Adderall?

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not on the Adderall label's interaction list. Keep to the label limit and do not take it with any other product that contains acetaminophen. Ask a doctor first if you have liver disease or take warfarin, per the Tylenol label.

Is Tylenol or ibuprofen better with Adderall for high blood pressure?

Neither source ranks them for people on Adderall. The Advil label asks people with high blood pressure or heart disease to check with a doctor before using ibuprofen, and the Tylenol Extra Strength label does not list high blood pressure in its warnings. Ask your doctor or pharmacist which fits you.

Do I need to space out ibuprofen and Adderall?

Neither label gives a spacing time between them. You can follow each label's own directions. If your stomach is upset, the Advil label says to take ibuprofen with food or milk.

Why do I get a headache when my Adderall wears off?

The Adderall XR label and MedlinePlus list headache as a side effect but do not explain when during the day it happens. If you notice a pattern, such as headaches at the same time each day, write it down and tell your prescriber. They can decide whether a change in your plan makes sense.
